Biography

Having begun playing music at the age of five, Emmanuel Girard has devoted his life to exploring and practicing the art. His studies at the Conservatoire National de Musique et de Danse de Paris earned him diplomas in cello, chamber music and the baroque department. He subsequently deepened his knowledge of art history at the Sorbonne University, where his thesis was devoted to Renaissance music.

Over the decades, he has had the opportunity to give concerts throughout Europe, in the United States, and more recently in Asia, in Korea and Japan, where he currently resides. Since 2009, he has taught cello, viola and chamber music at Tokyo's Toho Gakuen University, and since 2016 he has also been a professor at Miyagi Gakuin University.

His deep interest in the different periods of music history naturally led him to the study and practice of early instruments. This has enabled him to explore in depth the beauty of the Renaissance and Baroque repertoire. To rediscover the authentic sound of these periods and the particular style of each composer, he has discovered, thanks to the multiple Violas de Gambe, the Baritone and the Lirone, a new sound and aesthetic approach to the interpretation of musical works.

LIGHT

LIGHT

It is the size of the instruments and the diameter of the strings in this family of instruments that define the pitch of the sounds and the character of the timbre, the sonic identity. High-pitched sounds, bright and vibrant, are the expression of a bright light. They are subject to changes of register, bringing a sensation of extravagance and an immediate vibration that captivates the listener.

In contrast, low tones create a harmonic resonance that unlocks a more hidden sonic unconscious. They form the depth and shadow of the musical spectrum, adding a mysterious, introspective dimension to the aural experience.

L’Ensemble Marella

Miho Kamiya, Madoka Koike (violin)
Laurent Dublanchet (Viola da gamba)
Yamada Megumu (Cello).
